The Ultimate Guide to your Wedding Dancefloor

The first dance is one of the most special parts of any wedding ceremony – giving the happy couple an unforgettable start to married life. From there, the dancefloor becomes a place of jubilant celebration – where everyone gets the chance to throw some shapes and blow off some steam after months of careful planning and preparation. In this guide, we’ll be offering tips and guidance so that your dancefloor is a fantastic focal point for wedding festivities.

Do I need a dancefloor for my wedding?

A well-thought-out dancefloor will get everyone in the mood to party. This means not just having an open area for dancing, but giving everyone enough space to let loose (unless you want to create a mosh pit!) and ensuring that the lighting and audiovisual effects reflect the type of atmosphere you’re hoping to create. For instance, your dancefloor could be sleek and tasteful for a classier affair or something straight out of your favourite nightclub.

Ultimately, the exact layout and style of your dancefloor is up to you – but we recommend making it a key part of your reception planning so that your celebration is one to remember.

How big should the dancefloor be at my wedding?

The best dancefloors give everyone enough space to feel comfortable but also allow for mingling and spontaneous groups to form. The standard formula is to allow around 1.5 square metres of space for each dancer. Of course, not everyone will dance, but it’s safe to assume that at least half of your guests will. Use this as the maximum dancefloor space. A series of LED dancefloor modules will allow your DJ or MC to adjust the illuminated space based on how many people are dancing. They can define just enough space to look inviting, but not so much that guests feel self-conscious.

Can I have an outdoor dancefloor at my wedding?

You certainly can and, if the weather cooperates, it’s perfectly feasible to dance all night under the stars. However, it’s always wise to have a contingency plan, and your sound and lighting designers should be able to adapt to prevailing conditions. For instance, you may wish to have your outdoor dancefloor under a gazebo in case of rain – but this also gives you more space to decorate or illuminate with your choice of lighting.

Another key requirement is a stable surface. Outdoor areas are rarely 100% even-levelled, and bare ground and formal footwear rarely mix. Therefore, you need to be able to install a dancefloor with a smooth, solid surface that can easily be removed once the party’s over. Fortunately, with a professional production team on your side, this shouldn’t be much hassle.

What options do I have for a wedding dancefloor?

From the simple yet effective to the elegant and the flamboyant, there’s a whole range of options for you to pick a dancefloor that reflects the theme and ambience of your special day. Here are just a few examples:

  • Chequered black and white: Versatile and timeless – some things are classic for a reason. A chequered dancefloor can epitomise taste and elegance, or be lit up with neon lights for a retro throwback.
  • Scattered rugs: These are perfect for a rustic, boho or festival-style wedding, and are also easy to lay down and wrap up once the party’s over. It should also be pretty straightforward to find rugs that complement your chosen colour scheme.
  • Glossy wood finish: If a ballroom-style reception is your idea of heaven, a glossy wood surface has a gorgeous sheen and offers classic refinement but is also durable enough to withstand a raucous and energised crowd.

  • Pure white: Gorgeous, sleek and smooth, a pure white dancefloor not only embodies a traditional wedding style (while still being versatile) but also offers the perfect backdrop for your choice of lighting.

  • LED dancefloor: Whether your reception is disco-inspired or you’re looking for something more contemporary, the LED lights can be synced up with your choice of music – creating the perfect atmosphere for getting the party started!
